San Francisco: A Food Guide

Lately, I've been getting lots of phone calls and emails from family and friends wanting recommendations for restaurants in San Francisco. So I'll just give all of you a little run-down of some of my favorite food in the city. Next time you're here for a visit, remember to come hungry.

Tartine Bakery: This one's a no-brainer. Who doesn't like pastries and baked goods? (Please don't tell me if you don't. It might break my heart). If it's in season, do NOT miss the strawberry shortcake.
Oh, and if you want all their secrets, snag a copy of their cookbook here.

Angleina's: Start the weekend off right with a morning bun from this little corner shop. Trust me when I say you're not going to want to share...so get your own. {I couldn't find a picture of Angelina's morning buns...(just try not cringing when you type that phrase into google image search) but lucky for me, flickr member iwantamonkey has this pretty photo under a creative commons license. So I wanted to give her a shout-out for being so generous with her photos.} :)

Mama's on Washington Square: Be prepared to wait in line...but any wait you may face is well worth it. I always deliberate between the french toast and the Monte Cristo. Usually the french toast wins. {photo here}

 Nick's Crispy Tacos: It feels a little weird walking into a nightclub to order tacos (see below). But they're some of the crispiest, tastiest around. Also a pretty cheap eat for SF. {Photos: top, bottom}

See what I mean? Not your average taco joint.

Roam Artisan Burgers: My new favorite place in the city. Family-friendly and reeeeally good, too. Try the chipotle maple fries and the vanilla milkshake with the burger of your choice and you'll be hooked. Promise.

Little Star Pizza: Definitely worth a trip into the Western Addition. Not the most kid-friendly place. But  loud enough that the shrieks from the tiniest diners go {relatively} unnoticed. The deep dish is melty, cheesy heaven. If in doubt, try the garlic bread...it comes out with an entire bulb of roasted garlic.

Pane e Vino Trattoria: I always felt like this was my secret little place. Not a touristy place at all. I especially love that. You can tell most of the diners are regulars. They've got really great pizza. I love the Diavola, with tiny little pepperonis.

Burma Superstar: Do not miss that samosas, or the rainbow salad. Actually, everything there is fantastic. To put it in the words of a friend, "Burma Superstar rocks my world." Couldn't say it better myself. {photo here}

Marnee Thai: Hands down, best Thai food in the city. My stand-by is the yellow curry chicken. The owner is so nice, and (bouns!) she reads auras. Lucky for me, I was having a good aura day. :)

Genki Crepes: After you gorge yourself at Burma Superstar, look directly across the street for an orange sign. Follow the sign. Order yourself one of the 30 crepes, or create your own. Sit. Eat. Enjoy. You're welcome. {photo here}

I could go on and on (and on) but I'm sure you all have busy lives to attend to. Maybe I'll have to do another installment. I love sharing my favorite places in the city, but I feel like I'm not giving you the whole experience. Perhaps we'll have to take a little photo field trip together?

Editor's note: I just re-read this post and it sounds like I do nothing but eat. While I do like to eat (a lot), rest assured that this data was collected over six years of thorough and extensive research...I do actually have other hobbies, aside from eating. Like cooking, reading cookbooks, watching Food Network, and drooling over food blogs. I kid. Kind of.

Oh, and one more thing: unless otherwise noted, images were taken directly from the restaurant's websites. OK, that's it. Have a good day.

When my husband and I went to SF this summer we ate at Mama's and it was really good! The wait was hard especially being pregnant at the time and hungry but ti was worth it! My favorite place though, is Nob Hill Cafe!

PS: I am going to Sonoma/ Napa in a month and do you have any wineries you suggest that would be fun to tour?
