Dauphine Press

I heart letterpress. I especially love the work of Trish Kinsella of Dauphine Press, located in Sonoma, CA. She's so good, she's been featured in almost every magazine imaginable. Check out the website for more about Trish and her work.

The Namesake

The other day as Hudson was making a mess of the DVD shelf, I saw this amidst the mess. I remembered how much I loved this movie. Next time you have a stay-at-home movie night, definitely check out The Namesake.

Weekend Recap

{Berkeley Farmer's Market Image from NY Times}

My brain's feeling a little fried this morning after our busy weekend. But everything went much better than anticipated. We spent Saturday morning in Berkeley where Hudson played at Habitot for a couple hours. Then we walked over to the Farmer's Market, where we scored the following: two cups of fresh-brewed root beer, six asian pears, fresh salsa and corn tortillas, a really really good chocolate cookie, and one of those $1 newspapers that homelss people sell.

{Prickly Heat image from Grocery Thai}

From there, we hit up the Thai market, where Hudson pretended to drive the tuk tuk, and Bryce scored his much sought-after Prickly Heat Powder. I got another migraine on the way home, so I had to lay down until my meds kicked in, then it was back to work on our talks.

Sunday after Church, we went to the Anesthesia Picnic. (Yes, that's what they really called it). I think I may have been the only person who saw the humor in this. It was fun to go to a real picnic with real picnic games: potato sack races, three legged race, egg toss, horeshoes, bingo. I may also be the only one who thought it was funny that they played bingo with discarded vile caps (from the liquid meds used for IVs). I guess the anesthesia department is doing their part to recycle, too.

Then it was off to give our talks. I'm so relieved that it's over. But it went well, and we were able to keep them laughing, and get our message across. So that's that. Now we're (hopefully) just going to have a normal week. I've got a couple other posts lined up for you today, much less wordy...so thanks for stickin' through my last couple lengthy posts. Have a great week!

Ramblings

As I'm about to "close up shop" here on my blog for the weekend, I've got a few wandering thoughts I might as well throw out. My week has been kind of a whirlwind of activities, emotions, frustrations, and stress. It helps me to write it all down, so I can clear my head. Feel free to skim this entry, or skip over it completely...it won't hurt my feelings.
  • Since my family blog is no longer private, I don't feel there's any purpose to "disguising" My Boy's or Daddy's names any longer...since you could easily find them if you wanted to know. My Boy is named Hudson, and Daddy is Bryce. Just thought I'd let you know so you're not confused when I start throwing all these names around.
  • I realize I do this thing where I try to not act overly excited about anything. It all stems back from middle school when it was cool to be totally chill about everything. Now, I'm starting to think that that intentional suppression of my excitement comes across as bitterness or apathy. I'll have to work on that.
  • I've been irritated over a plumbing situation at our house. The upstairs shower has been leaking down into the kitchen below. Gross. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.
  • I started the long road of fertility treatments yesterday. It really opened my eyes as to the long road ahead. I'm sure the next few months will be filled with all sorts of tests, treatments, and probably mood swings from yours truly. I always knew it, but yesterday was a wake up call that I need to take better care of myself (namely, diet and exercise). As for the whole infertility thing...I always knew it was likely that I'd need a bit of intervention to have kids, In fact, I was very surprised when Hudson joined our family so easily. I'm not upset at all about the current situation I find myself in. I just don't want to hide from it. It's a part of my life. If you know me at all, you know that I'm really not a private person. That's how I want my blog to be. Just an accurate reflection of the real me...all the unpleasant and uncomfortable stuff too. Hopefully all this fertility talk won't scare you away from my blog. I promise not to dwell on it, but it will likely come up again in the future.
  • And with the "real" me comes religion. I'm LDS (Mormon). Have been for my entire life. At first, I was aiming to keep my blog religiously neutral, so everyone would feel welcome here. And I hope everyone will continue to feel welcome here. My religion seeps into all aspects of my life, so it's really hard to keep things separate. If you have questions about my religion or my beliefs, please feel free to email me, or check out the official Church Site.
  • Now here's the thing I'm insanely nervous about for the week: Bryce and I are the speakers at a Stake Fireside on Sunday. We did a little casual fireside a while back, addressing issues of technology and communication. My part is actually really fun...it's kind of like texting etiquette and communicating effectively through technology. I guess our first attempt went pretty well, because we were invited to do the same thing again; but on a much larger scale. Our fireside is in two days, and I'm seriously freaking out. I am not a good public speaker...I get so nervous, and my voice gets all hoarse. I get flustered and embarrassed; hopefully I can keep it together long enough to get my message across. Hopefully I can somehow approach this the same way I did the fashion presentations I used to do with my friend Camilla...I never got nervous for those.
  • Bryce has another work-related BBQ on Sunday afternoon. I always look forward to these things, but I'm also nervous about it. I always feel so awkward around the hospital crowd.
  • One more thing: Did you watch The Office last night? Wasn't Jim's proposal to Pam the cutest thing ever? Sigh.

So that's about it. If you're still reading now, I'm impressed. Thanks for sticking it out. Now that I've got all these ramblings out of my head, maybe I can concentrate on my talk for Sunday. You can bet that's what we'll be doing all weekend.

Ugh. I'm a little grossed out that I just took up all that space talking about myself. Don't worry, I won't make a habit of it. Have a nice weekend...and keep your fingers crossed that I make it through my talk without passing out!

And the Winner is...

...Addi, with her bid of $50!

Addi was away from her computer, but called me at the last minute with her bid. She has a very good reason for being away from her computer at such a critical time...she was at the SYTYCD concert; oh how I wish I could have gone!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Auction for NieNie. I want to send those who bid a little thank you, so please email me your mailing address and I'll send you a free gift!

Congratulations, Addi! And thanks for your generosity.

Kitchen Sink Clutter Control

For me, the kitchen sink is usually one of the hardest spaces to keep organized in my home. There's such a variety of ugly plugs, sponges, scrubbers, soaps, and other unsightly items that clutter up the sink area. I found an article in a magazine somewhere (I wish I could remember where) a long time ago detailing how to get the clutter under control and most importantly, out of sight. If my kitchen sponges were as pretty as these pictured above, from Martha Stewart, I wouldn't have to worry about them being on display...but that's not the case. So I choose to hide the ugly stuff.

This article (I swear it was in either Martha Stewart Living or Real Simple...but I can't find it on either website) showed how to organize the door of your under-sink cupboard to house all those unsightly kitchen sink necessities. One quick trip to the Container Store, and my kitchen sink is clutter-free. I used removable Command Adhesive Strips to attach everything so I wouldn't damage the cabinet door. I used a plastic bag holder to keep all my plastic bags, and I found a little basket to hold all the sponges, and drain covers. There's hooks for my scrub brush and dish cloth. It's definitely not pretty, but it keeps all this ugly stuff out of sight. And everything hangs separately so it has time to dry out between uses.

Next, make the visible stuff pleasant to look at:

I just got this hand JR Watkins hand soap on my latest trip to Target. I love the vintagey packaging. Plus, the product is a natural plant-based formula, dye-free, non-toxic, and not tested on animals. And, it looks cute too! Now I need to step up my search for one of these great bottles (below, from Martha Stewart) for my dish soap and I'm set.

So the re-cap for today:
Pretty Sink + Organized Kitchen = Happy Mom.
Oh, and if you know which magazine article I'm talking about let me know. It's killing me!

Hummingbirds

Here's a tribute to my latest obession...the amazing hummingbirds who like to visit my patio. I can't stop watching them. I'm so glad my next door neighbor has great flowers that attract the lovely little creatures. Here are some great hummingbird items I found on Etsy:

1. Made to Order Hummingbird Bowl , by Circa Ceramics
2. Aqua Blue Hummingbird Rectangle Pillow, by joom
3. Hummingbird Notecard Set, by designhutusa
4. Hummingbird with Blue Circle Trees Print, by jaimers
5. Hummingbird Garden Print, by treetop studio
6. Flight of the Hummingbirds III, by EA Sawyer
7. Hummingbird Tote Bag, by Deadworry
8. Hummingbird Return Addres Labels, by Krystan
9. Sawed Hummingbirds Bracelet, by Brand New Etsy seller bandada

I think I'm going to find a cute hummingbird feeder today, to lure the little beauties onto my patio so I can watch them closer. Have a great Thursday.

Combines

Mars Lander

This could be just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. Artist John Stephenson has been collecting old car parts and transforming them into functional, lit sculptures since the 1980's. How cool would it be to have one of his pieces in your family room, office, or a little boy's room? It would definitely be a unique piece full of personality to liven up your space.

Check out his site for more information about the artist, and to see more of his work.

Mark Your Calendar

A week from tonight marks the return of one of my very favorite shows, Pushing Daisies. I'm so excited! Definitely a fun show that is so different than anything else on TV these days. Give it a try...you'll love it! Pushing Daisies Season 2 premiers Wednesday, October 1 at 8:00 pm.

Mother of the Year

I took My Boy to the library on Monday. I'd intended just a quick visit--grab some books and go. Because of this, I didn't bother to grab my diaper bag. We made our selections and headed back to the car. I aksed My Boy to get into his car seat and he said, "I can't sit. I have poop." I tried explaining to him that I didn't have the diaper bag, hence no wipes or diapers, so we'd just have to wait till we got home. He absolutely refused to sit with his diaper in that condition. So I mentally ran down the list of possibilities...none of which were pretty. And of course, I didn't have so much as an old napkin to use in my favor, since Daddy had so lovingly cleaned out my car over the weekend.

So I ended up wiping his little tush with some scratchy newspaper (thank heavens I picked it up off the drive earlier that morning) and some spray hand sanitizer previously mentioned on this blog. After he was sufficiently cleaned up, My Boy thought it was funny that he had to go commando on the ride home. After we got home and resolved the problem, I vowed I would never leave the house without wipes or diapers. Ever.

Unfortunately, I grabbed a different diaper bag yesterday and we had a very similar repeat of Monday's events. At least this diaper bag had diapers in it. And I happened to have some napkins and an old bottle of water handy, so the situation wasn't quite as grim as the previous day. Seriously, though...My Boy is a very private pooper. He rarely relieves himself away from home. What are the chances that two days in a row he takes care of business when I'm so ill-prepared? And really, what kind of a mom leaves the house totally unprepared for a messy disaster?

Needless to say, I'm now taking nominations for Mother of the Year.

Do you hear that?

This cardigan is calling my name.

Quick Project

I really liked these clipboards I found in the September issue of Martha Stewart Living.
Over the weekend, I created some for myself:

Obviously, mine aren't as pretty as Martha's. But I find them very useful for keeping track of special projects I'm working on at the moment. I like them so much, I think I'm going to make a few more.

Banana Bundt Cake

I made this Banana Bundt Cake for some dinner guests yesterday. They cancelled at the last minute, but we were OK with that...more cake for us! It's definitely a favorite at our house, so I make it often. Hope you like it as much as we do!
Here's the Recipe:
2 Bananas, Mashed
1 white cake mix
1 small box vanilla instant pudding
3 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1/3 cup water
2 tbsp. oil
1/4 tsp. baking powder
Cream Cheese Frosting
Preheat oven to 350. Combine bananas, cake mix, pudding, eggs, sour cream, water oil and baking powser. Mix just until moistened. Pour batter into greased and floured bundt pan. Bake 45-50 minutes. Invert cake onto platter. Drizzle vanilla-cream cheese icing over warm cake.

Have a lovely weekend.

It finally feels like fall. Grab a cozy sweater and enjoy the beautiful weather.

John W. Golden

I know I've been a little heavy on the artwork this week, but I'm so excited about this one I think my head might explode.

I started my search yesterday for some cool artwork for The Boy's bedroom and bathroom. Finding artwork for boys is hard...at least for me. I'm pretty particular--I wanted something that he would be able to enjoy now, and when he gets older. I didn't want anything to baby-ish, or too sweet. So I started my search on Etsy, of course, and I'm so excited about what I found. Clearly, I'm not the first person to find artist John W. Golden. I've seen his By Order of the Management signs on the front page before, and loved them. But when I found his shop I was blown away (still am) at his amazing work; and it's all spot-on perfect what I'd dreamed of for My Boy's room.

John W. Golden is an artist who began his career as a professional artist at the age of 11. He has done work for Nickelodeon, Cartoon Netowrk, HGTV, Animal Planet, TBS, and TNT...among other major networks. In May of last year John started selling his artwork full time for his living. It is so hard for me to choose which I like the best; that's really the only reason I haven't made my purchase yet. I think all his stuff is so awesome, I'm really in a dither about what to pick. Without further delay, please enjoy some of John's artwork:

Motoretta Series Scooter Print

Brush Your Teeth

And of course, being the wife of a dentist, we're definitely getting this one. I think Daddy would approve.

The pieces I've featured here are only a slight few of my favorites. Definitely visit John's Etsy Shop for more cool, dude-friendly artwork. Read his blog to see what's going on with John and his artwork. Also, check out Mot and Dot, the shop John and his wife have for cute, customizable kids artwork.

Nie Nie Auction

I know this seems a bit late, for those of you who are aware of Stephanie & Christian Nielson's situation. I've been lurking around both Nie's blog and C Jane's blog (Nie's sister) since I read about the accident. I've felt such sadness in my heart for everyone involved and wished there was something I could do to help. Since my blog was brand new at the time of Nie Nie Day, I held off on doing an auction for fear that nobody would even see it. After talking with my friends yesterday, most of whom know about Stephanie and Christian, I realized my hesitation was silly and selfish. So now I'm jumping in to do what I can.

I'm auctioning off a complete party package, which includes:

  • Custom Invitation Design
  • Invitations + Envelopes (Limit 50 invitations)
  • Party Favor Tags
  • Place Cards
  • Thank You Notes
  • Custom Printed Napkins
  • Event Planning Service

I will work with you to design the perfect party. From the invitations to the table décor, and party favors, your party will be spectacular. I will also help you with ideas for your menu, party décor, and theme. So if you have a bridal or baby shower, birthday party, small wedding, holiday party, or just want an excuse to throw a party, now's your chance to donate to a good cause.

Here's how it works: Bidding starts at $20. Bids must be in $1 increments, and the auction closes at 11:59 PM PST on Thursday, Sept. 25. To place a bid, simply leave a comment on this post with your bid amount, and your email address. The winner will then send their donation to the Nie Recovery Foundation PayPal account. Send me a copy of your receipt, and we’ll get working on your party.

Please, please tell your friends! And say a prayer for Stephanie, Christian and their kids.
{Including the Event Planning Services and paper goods, this package is valued at $250.}

I suck at making friends

It's true. I really, really suck at making new friends. I'm kind of shy and insecure...especially around new people. Because of this, I always dread moving. Up to this point in my life, I've relied on having a built-in set of friends I meet at school or Church. Since we're not technically in school anymore, I was banking on making new friends for myself and for The Boy at Church. Turns out there's only one other mom with a child under 5 there (hi, Kirsten)...so I found myself in a bit of a predicament. Don't get me wrong. There's tons of nice ladies at Church...but they're not really part of the playground set.
So I was really relieved when Kirsten clued me in on the phenomenon of meetup.com. Yes, I realize that it sounds a bit sleazy, but hear me out. It's this website that organizes all sorts of groups for people to share their common interests. Seriously, there's a group for everything...here's a small sampling:

And no, I'm not joking. They're all real groups...see for yourself. The only thing I couldn't find was a Bay Area Street Hockey Group (for Daddy, not for me). Anyway, you get the idea. For myself, I found tons of mom's groups in my area. Each group has specific requirements. For my groups, I had to fill out my profile, complete with a picture. Then it has to be approved by the group leader. Once approved, you have access to the activities calendar and message boards, etc. You RSVP for any activity that you want to go to, and then all you have to do is show up.

Of course, then there are those first awkward times roaming around the playground nervously asking random strangers, "Are you part of (insert group name here)?" But once I actually met some of the group members, it was a piece of cake. Plus, by having access to the calendar, I learned all the cool kid things in the area that I would have never known about otherwise. There are some really cool moms and kids out there who do lots of fun stuff. And it saved my bacon since I'm horrible at making friends on my own.

That's it on this topic. But if you're looking for fellow dog-lovers, rock-climbers, or dessert-eaters, maybe this is your answer.

Locket

I saw this fabric-covered locket in Lucky several issues back, and I can't stop thinking about it.

Catching Up

I'm a little slow, but I've been dying to read Breaking Dawn. I've been responsible enough to put it off until now so I could complete my work. Now that I'm all caught up (mostly), I'm joinig the rest of humanity who has all ready read it. Just a warning: I'll probably be neglecting my family, my blog, my work, and everything else for the next couple days...nothing personal.

Cheer Up, Old Gal

Cheerful Stripes, originally uploaded by QueenNeveen.

I woke up in a bad mood today. This picture helped to cheer me up.

Now we're off to the City for the flea market and some playtime with old friends. Today's looking up, after all.

Hillarie Tasche

Let me introduce you to the fabulous artwork of Hillarie Tasche:

Chocolat Rouge

Unfortunately for me, this piece is long gone. But this painting is what initially attracted my attention. Since then, I've become a huge fan of Hillarie's work. If you like this painting, you should check out the similar painting named Lady Red.

I love her bike print series. I'm seriously contemplating buying the entire set!

And the Graffiti Train is just too cool. It would be fun to have each car framed and lined up on the wall like a train.

Hillarie is a law student living in Saskatoon, Canada. Her watercolor paintings are originals...so you definitely get a unique piece. The print series (bikes and trains) are done in limited quantities, so get yours before they're gone...but save one for me!

Nice Bootie

I've never been much for ankle boots. If worn the wrong way, they can make for a quick fashion disaster. If done properly, however, it's a whole different story. I don't know what's gotten into me, but lately I quite like the little booties. I'm a bit nervous about it, but this year I'm going to go out on a limb and try them. I'm going to ease into it by wearing them with jeans for a while. I'll let you know how it goes.

Here are some of my favorites:
These would make any outfit look instantly sophisticated. I love the muted shade as well.

Nanette Lepore "Corset" Bootie

One of my all time favorite designers, so it's no surprise that I love these shoes.

Sofft "Freeda" Bootie

I have a pair of shoes by Sofft; they're SO comfortable! These would be the perfect everyday booties.

Tribeca "Fine Frenzy" Bootie

I love how slouchy and comfy these look. Plus, the heel is low enough and substantial enough I could still chase after The Boy while wearing these.

Aturo Chiang "Tamra"

Gray is such an easy color to work with, and the flap is so cute!

Frye "Ava" Boot

These are high enough they don't seem quite as risky as a bootie; this is the perfet boot to wear with jeans.

L.A.M.B. "Rosebury"

Gwen Stefani does it again! These are simply spectacular.
